The QUT Faculty of Law is one of Australia's largest tertiary educators in Law and Justice. The Faculty is a leader in its field, with world class lecturers and researchers on its academic staff.

The Faculty consists of the School of Law, the School of Justice, the Legal Practice Unit and the Law and Justice Research Centre. Amongst its facilities are a state-of-the-art electronic moot court, a dedicated Law Library and two 24-hour student computer labs.

The Faculty offers undergraduate study through the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and the Bachelor of Justice (BJus) courses. A range of double degree programs is also available, including the Bachelor of Laws in conjunction with the Bachelor of Justice or with a bachelor degree in Applied Science, Arts, Business, Creative Industries, Journalism, Information Technology or Behavioural Science (Psychology).

A three-year accelerated Bachelor of Laws program is available for students who already hold a bachelor degree in another discipline. These students may also have the opportunity to select their elective units from the Law School's postgraduate program and graduate concurrently with a Graduate Certificate in Law.

The Faculty also offers a range of postgraduate study options in the Law and Justice disciplines, including graduate certificate and graduate diploma courses, masters degrees by coursework or research, and doctoral programs. These programs build on previous study and/or professional experience and allow graduate students to develop depth of expertise in their chosen specialist area.

The Law School prepares students for careers in law firms, government, public administration, business and other industries. The School of Justice produces graduates with qualifications for employment in policing, justice, defence, security and the social justice field.

What sets QUT Faculty of Law apart is its focus on education 'for the real world'. Faculty programs provide a sound balance of practical and theoretical training, facilitating the smooth transition of graduates into their chosen careers. The Faculty's real world approach is enhanced by its close liaison and collaboration with the legal and justice professions.

The Faculty is continually striving for excellence in learning and teaching in response to the demands of its graduates, their employers, the professions and the community. The Faculty's teaching and learning programs develop research and analytical skills within contextual and conceptual frameworks. A global approach to education is adopted which includes international visiting scholars, exchange programs for staff and students, and offshore programs. International and Indigenous content and perspectives are progressively being embedded in Faculty units.

In 2007/2008, the Faculty is reviewing its Bachelor of Laws program and it is anticipated that a revised curriculum for the course will be introduced from semester 1, 2009. The revised program (subject to University approval) will feature, amongst other things, a more flexible curriculum with greater elective choice for students. Electives will be streamed into groups reflecting the range of career destinations of law graduates, and groups reflecting the research strengths of the Faculty. Students who commence in the Bachelor of Laws in 2008 will be transitioned over to the new curriculum for 2009.

Other initiatives to enhance the quality of the educational experience offered by the Faculty include courses designed to develop graduate capabilities, a field in which the Faculty is an acknowledged leader, and online delivery of teaching. The Faculty's online teaching sites provide electronic access to a variety of course materials, and a broad array of Internet resources, including opportunities for staff-student communication such as email, SMS and internet chat.

Postgraduate research students are provided with dedicated office space and ICT facilities. The Faculty has staff qualified to supervise research in many fields including, but not limited to:

Through the Legal Practice Unit, the Faculty offers the Legal Practice Course (the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice) to law graduates who wish to satisfy the practical training requirements to be admitted as legal practitioners. The course is offered twice a year in full-time mode, and three times a year in part-time (in-practice) and part-time (general) modes. The part-time in-practice mode is specially designed for persons who are already working in private or government law offices. The part-time courses are delivered online for the convenience of persons who are working full-time or who otherwise do not wish to study on campus. The full-time course is delivered on-campus in purpose-built premises that provide every full-time student with a work station and networked PC while they are working on campus. Our Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is Queensland's longest established practical legal training course and we have successfully prepared over 1000 law graduates for admission as legal practitioners. The course has built a reputation for quality and for providing graduates with the set of skills they need to commence legal practice.

The QUT Faculty of Law, with its real world approach and its focus on the right balance of skills and theory, consistently achieves high graduate employment rates, further supporting its position as one of Australia's leading law faculties.
